80年代に世界のデザイン界に衝撃を与えた、ラディカルデザイン運動のメンフィス・ミラノの約200点もの作品が勢ぞろい！圧巻！ 会場のトリエンナーレ美術館で出迎えてくれるのは、今でもミラノ・デザインのアイコンにもなってる本棚「カールトン」デザインはグループ主催者エットーレ・ソットサス。
About 200 works by Memphis Milano, a radical design movement that shocked the world’s design world in the 1980s, are lined up! A masterpiece! At the venue, the Triennale Museum, you will be greeted by the bookshelf “Carlton” which is still an icon of Milan design. Designed by the group organizer, Ettore Sottsass.
バウハウスから始まった合理的だが、退屈な「モダン・デザイン」や「グッドデザイン」へのアンチテーゼだった。筆者も初めて見る実物が多く、こんなに一堂に勢ぞろいは初めてだ。作品群はファションショーの様に一列に時系列に並び、当時のディスコミュージックで演出され、流れや影響の変化が面白い。

ソットサスの自宅のパーティからスタートしたこの運動、初めは子弟のミケーレ・デ・ルッキ、マテオ・トゥンなど。今や著名デザイナー。
This movement, which started from a party at Sottsass’s home, gradually involved designers from all over the world from Sottsass Association such as Michele de Lucchi and Mateo Thun,
そして、世界中のデザイナーも巻き込み、 マイケルグレイブス、ハンスホライン、磯崎新、倉俣史郎など当時の第一線の建築家やデザイナーが参加した。そして、見事に世界中の有名建築・デザイン雑誌の表紙を飾った。日本では西武デパートのCMにも使われた。
Leading architects and designers of the time, such as Michael Graves,Hans Hollein, Arata Isozaki, and Shiro Kuramata, participated. And it brilliantly decorated the cover of famous architecture and design magazines all over the world.
しかし、約5年後にはソットサスが退き、1988年には解散。「形優先のキッチュなデザイン」との批判もあった。
However, about five years later, Sottsass retired and dissolved in 1988. There was also criticism that it was a “kitsch design that prioritized shape.”
ソットサスは言った、「斬新なアイディアは長く続かない。キュビズムですら3年、そしてシュールリアリズムになった、、、」「メンフィスは“デザイン” と言う言葉に、新しい息吹を送った」と、コレクターだったカール・ラガーフェルトの言葉。「明るく活気あるデザイン」は今でも来場者に考えさせる。
Sottsass said, “Innovative ideas don’t last long. Even Cubism has become Surrealism for three years …”
“Memphis has taken a new breath in the word” Design, ” said collector Karl Lagerfeld.
